Wonderful find - batik soft sculpture row houses created by Arnelle Dow of Ohio Signed: Arnelle A. Dow 1981
Artist statement: Dow Houses - I created them in the late 70's , drew 6 different buildings all Cincinnati or Newport KY. row houses. I had silk screens made of the drawings and then did prints on cotton fabric. I then waxed and dyed in the traditional batik process which I've done for the last 30+ years. After they were cleaned, wax removed, I sewed them, stuffed them and sold them across the eastern US at craft and art shows. They were published a couple of times in the newspaper and books. I did them till around 1985-6.
I was drawn to them for their uniqueness. When I moved to Cincinnati from Iowa, I was stroke by the fact that only shops were row houses by the time you got west to Iowa. That is unless I was in a river town on down the Ohio and Mississippi. I knew I had reached the 'east'. My houses are easily recognizable as Cincinnati houses.
